SP1 End of Days
October 12, 2006 – 2:35 pmWell 10th Oct was a big day for Windows XP users, it was the last day of support for SP1. No more patches for SP1 users from Microsoft, so I’ve had to reluctantly move all my machines from SP1 to SP2.
Bit of a pain as I still have a lot of code that uses raw sockets for testing so to use it again it will need rewriting.
Also the upgrade process killed my Windows Dev workstation, SP2 installed ok, but proceeded to trash Explorer and the SCSI subsystem so the machine wouldn’t at first boot. Mainly down to it trashing something in Daemon Tools which I had installed on the machine.
End result I had to vape and start again… Did I ever say I hate Windows… Interestingly I bet the ploy Microsoft have just pulled by killing SP1 support will be repeated to force users to migrate to Vista when that is released. Expect an announcement within a couple of months of Vista release stating XP support will end within a year.
