Time Flies…

Was thinking something today upon hearing Tony Blair’s most recent statement about Afghanistan.

He said we’ll stay there till the job is done, interestingly we have been there now 5 years fighting, what is funny is that the Russian invaded in December 79 and where there fighting the same people pretty much as we are for just under 10 years before they where finally forced to withdraw.

During the Soviet-Afghan war over 600,000 troops where deployed over the entire period, tho at any one time there was a force of between 80,000 and 104,000 personnel involved. Even with that level of involvement they not able to beat them, and remember at that point in the cold war the Soviet armed forces where huge and well funded, not like what is left now.

I wonder when we leave, how long it will be before the hard liners take control again.. Plus will we be forced to leave with a bloody nose similar to the one given to the Soviets, do we really have what it will take to fight what in the end is a lost cause? After all the longer we stay the more we become an occupation force not a liberation force and when that happens the public will turn against us (though, I think there are a few people that will argue that we at that stage now given it has been 5 years). Well only time will tell.

I’m not even going to comment on the impact Iraq has on this, other than to say it made the situation worse.
